The Americas had already been settled, however, thousands of years earlier by many millions of people. They founded colonies in Africa, India, Southeast and East Asia, Oceania, and the Americas.Įuropeans viewed the Americas as an enormous wilderness area with great economic potential. The European countries of England, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands (Holland) vied with one another for nearly four centuries to gain economic advantages in overseas territories.
